Protocol on geoconservation and geoheritage
Lots of people are coming to geoconservation and geoheritage for the first time, some from non-geological disciplines. The text below may be of assistance in explaining a few of the basic principles of geoheritage, of effective geosite use and protection.
These principles are in line with thinking in the ProGEO community and our associations' published aims, building upon the original Digne Declaration which ProGEO's Council wrote in 1991. Please visit the Protocol page.
GEOHERITAGE. Our Journal!
"Geoheritage".
A new scientific, ProGEO-based journal is since 2009 released and growing stronger. Coming papers are available on springerlink.com as 'On-line first'.
The new, updated information from Springer is found here. Please also use this pdf flyer, to spread the information.
There is
a special subscription price for ProGEO members. At the meeting at Rab, Croatia, journal subscription fees and ProGEO membership fees have been decided. Please see this summary.
Short info:
The contract has been signed by the former president of ProGEO, Dr Francesco Zarlenga, and the renowned publishers Springer Verlag, has launched the journal.
Thus we make - after months of talks, planning, and letter writing to the developing network around the World - a concrete step towards publication of the first journal of its kind! That is, the first serious peer-reviewed journal ever that has been dedicated to geoheritage (site and portable), geoconservation, interpretation and geotourism. There is a great opportunity in front of us all – to advance both the thinking on our shared geo(morpho)logical heritage and its practical protection, and to globalise activity and interchange.
Of course, ProGEO is not the only organisation involved, it represents a consortium of participating partners in this venture, including: the IUGS Commission on Geoscience for Environmental Management (GEM), the IUGS Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) and subcommissions, INHIGEO (IUGS International Commission on History of Geological Sciences), the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG), the International Association of Palaeontologists (IPA), the European Association of Geological Societies (AEGS), the Geological Society of Africa (GSA), and the Office of World Geoparks, Beijing, as well as national bodies and many respected colleagues in many fields. It is pleasure to thank all who have given their support and ideas thus far.
We hope you share the executive committee’s enthusiasm for this latest development. Please tell your ProGEO and all national contacts about his step forward to the launch of Geoheritage. We ask national ProGEO representatives and regional chairmen to circulate this information as soon as possible, and if you can to convene meetings in your country to discuss written contributions and membership subscriptions.
