- The GEOSITES project
The GEOSITES project was started by IUGS in 1996. IUGS, with support from UNESCO, decided to establish a worldwide catalogue of geological sites of international importance, Geosites. The purpose is to introduce a geological input to global conservation efforts, be this for World Heritage purposes or any other conservation programme. The body responsible for this task is the Global Geosites Working Group, the GGWG. The GEOSITES project operates in Europe through ProGEO. The work is carried out by ProGEO’s regional working groups and aims at setting up frameworks, within which to select and to make choices of areas or sites. These frameworks provide guidelines for the compilation of Geosite candidate lists in European countries and contribute to the joint GEOSITES inventory.
